Most women complain of dealing with hypertension during their pregnancy. It can lead to less blood flow to the placenta, resulting in reduced oxygen and nutrients reaching the foetus. This can cause slow growth, low birth weight, or premature birth. Thus, it becomes important to follow measures that can help you avoid this condition and enjoy a healthy pregnancy. We spoke to our expert Dr Nazia Dalwai, MBBS DGO, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Mumbai, who listed effective strategies that can help to avoid hypertension during pregnancy.
Tips To Avoid Hypertension During Pregnancy
According to StatPearls, hypertensive disorders impact 5% to 10% of all pregnancies, with pre-eclampsia occurring in 2-8% of pregnancies worldwide.
1. Regular Prenatal Care
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seek early and consistent prenatal care by attending all scheduled appointments with your doctor or healthcare professional. “Regular check-ups allow healthcare providers to monitor blood pressure and detect any early signs of hypertension. During these visits, healthcare providers can offer personalised advice and interventions to help manage blood pressure,” said Dr Dalwai.
2. Maintain a Healthy Diet
A balanced diet is essential for managing blood pressure. Expectant mothers should focus on eating various fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Keeping your sodium intake in check is vital because too much can cause a rise in blood pressure.

3. Stay Active
According to the American Heart Association Journals, exercise can lower the risk of gestational hypertension by approximately 30% and preeclampsia by around 40%.
Dr Dalwai added, “Regular physical activity can help manage blood pressure and promote overall health during pregnancy. Low-impact exercises, such as walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are excellent choices.” These activities can help improve circulation, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy weight.
However, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine to ensure it’s safe for both the mother and the baby.
4. Monitor Weight Gain
Healthy weight gain during pregnancy is crucial for the well-being of both mother and baby. Excessive weight gain can increase the risk of hypertension and other complications. Your healthcare provider can help you understand how much weight you should gain based on your pre-pregnancy weight and overall health. Following their recommendations for weight gain can help keep your blood pressure in check and lower the risk of developing hypertension.
5. Limit Caffeine and Avoid Alcohol
High caffeine intake has been linked to increased blood pressure, so it’s important to limit consumption during pregnancy. “Also, alcohol should be avoided entirely as it can lead to serious complications for both the mother and the baby. You can opt for decaffeinated beverages and plenty of water to stay hydrated and maintain healthy blood pressure levels,” added Dr Dalwai.

6. Get Enough Sleep
Dr Dalwai said, “Good sleep habits are important for keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level. Pregnancy can bring about changes in sleep patterns, but it’s important to prioritise rest. Creating a comfortable sleep environment, establishing a regular sleep schedule, and practising good sleep hygiene can help ensure restful sleep.”

7. Manage Stress
Did you know stress can contribute to high blood pressure? Deep breathing exercises, meditation, and mindfulness practices are great ways to manage stress and promote relaxation. Also, engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as reading, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing hobbies, can have a positive impact on mental and physical health.
8. Avoid Smoking and Exposure to Secondhand Smoke
Smoking during pregnancy is a big no. Not only this, you should also avoid exposure to secondhand smoke as it can significantly increase the risk of hypertension and other complications during pregnancy. Seeking support to quit smoking can have a profound impact on the health of both the mother and the baby.
9. Follow Medical Advice
If a healthcare provider prescribes medication to manage blood pressure, it’s crucial to take it as directed. “Some medications are safe to use during pregnancy and can help keep blood pressure levels under control. Never stop or adjust medication without consulting a healthcare provider, as this can have serious implications for both the mother and the baby,” highlighted Dr Dalwai.
