Pregnancy is a much-awaited time for any woman, filled with anticipation and joy. However, India’s monsoon season brings its own set of challenges, especially in terms of health for all pregnant women. Ensuring proper care during pregnancy is crucial, and taking extra precautions during the monsoon season is essential to maintaining both the mother’s and baby’s health. To know about this detail we consulted Dr Y Subhashini, Consultant Obstetrician, Head, Dept of Academics, Fernandez Hospital. Take a look at these expert tips and advice to help expecting mothers navigate this rainy season safely and comfortably:
Pregnancy Care Necessary Tips To Follow During Monsoon
1. Stay Hydrated
During the monsoon season, humidity levels rise, making it quite necessary for pregnant women to stay hydrated. Dr Y Subhashini says, “To avoid contamination, prefer purified or boiled water. Adequate hydration helps prevent headaches, fatigue, nausea, giddiness, and skin dryness. Carrying a water bottle is a great habit to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day.” Drink plenty of water throughout the day, you can also drink coconut water and herbal teas.
2. Eat Fresh and Hygienic Food
The expert suggests, “Juicy fruits with high sugar content are magnets for flies and pests, which can carry infectious diseases. It’s best not to leave cut fruits open or stored for long periods. Always consume cut fruits or fresh juices immediately. Make sure to wash and prep raw vegetables, especially leafy greens multiple times to remove all dirt and potential contaminants.” Due to increased humidity, there is a higher risk of food and waterborne diseases during monsoon. So stick to freshly home-cooked meals.
3. Boost Immunity With Nutritious Diet
Next is having a balanced diet. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is crucial for the health of both the mother and the baby. Include immunity-boosting foods such as leafy greens, nuts, and yoghurt in your daily meals, as per Medindia. You can even consult with your Gynecologist for dietary recommendations.
4. Maintain Personal Hygiene
Dr Y Subhashini also emphasises the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene. She says, “Personal hygiene and regular hand sanitisation are vital to keep germs at bay and ensure a healthy environment for the expectant mother and her baby.” Keep yourself clean and dry to prevent fungal infections, which are common during humid weather.

6. Exercise Moderately
“To keep your mood elevated and ensure safety, opt for indoor exercises (Low-Impact Exercises Pregnant Women Can Practice) like yoga, Zumba, or aerobics instead of walking on muddy roads or waterlogged pathways”, says our expert Dr Y Subhashini. Avoid strenuous activities and always listen to your body’s signals.
7. Protect Against Mosquito Bites
Mosquito-borne diseases like malaria (Causes, Symptoms And Prevention Of Malaria) and dengue are prevalent during this monsoon. Use mosquito repellents recommended for pregnant women, wear long sleeves and pants, and sleep under a mosquito net to minimise exposure.
Note: Regular check-ups are crucial to monitor your health and the baby’s development. Keep track of your appointments and consult your Gynecologist immediately if you experience fever, severe headache, or abdominal pain.
