4. Gutting Agencies that Protect Pregnant People and Families
Trump is making cuts to federal agencies to the detriment of pregnant people and their families, and appointed anti-abortion loyalists to his cabinet. Anti-abortion extremists RFK Jr. (HHS), Pam Bondi (DOJ), Marco Rubio (Secretary of State), Pete Hegseth (Secretary of Defense), Russ Vought (OMB), and Mehmet Oz (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) have all been confirmed to Trump’s cabinet—and they are not hesitating to implement his anti-abortion agenda.
Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services, under the helm of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., proposed $40 billion in budget slashes—putting maternal health, and STI testing under threat. The strategy? Starve the system, then say it’s failing.
And while Trump touts his meaningless IVF order that did absolutely nothing to improve access to fertility treatments, he’s also teaming up with Elon Musk to gut the CDC’s maternal health and fertility treatment research teams—which will no doubt worsen our U.S. maternal mortality crisis.

2. Threatening Medicaid
Medicaid is under threat from Republican lawmakers, their anti-abortion extremist allies, and their billionaire cronies across three fronts:
- In Congress: Republican lawmakers have proposed gutting Medicaid through budget reconciliation efforts—slashing funding in exchange for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
- In the courts: the Supreme Court’s ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic could open the door for states to block Medicaid patients from getting care from reproductive health care providers.
- In federal agencies: CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) is now headed by anti-abortion extremist Mehmet Oz who could alter Medicaid in ways that would put critical care out of reach.
More than 70 million people rely on Medicaid—especially women and pregnant people. It funds nearly half of all births, covers essential care like birth control and prenatal visits, and helps people access care before, during, and after pregnancy.

Even in the face of all this, we are fighting back. Here are a few glimmers of progress:
Millions of People United in Protest
Republican Freedom for All and our partners joined together to support Planned Parenthood ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearings for Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. We were also an organizing partner for Hands Off, a national day of action when millions of people flooded 1,300 events nationwide to push back against Trump, Elon Musk, and Republican lawmakers and defend reproductive freedom, LGBTQIA+ rights, and Medicaid.
Republican lawmakers got so much criticism at their town halls that Speaker Mike Johnson encouraged the GOP to cancel them altogether.
We Held Senators Accountable to Reject Trump’s Cabinet
Together we pressured our Senators to reject Trump’s dangerous anti-abortion cabinet nominees. While the Republican-majority Senate ultimately backed Trump’s picks, we refused to back down without a fight.
