Pregnancy In Late 30s
As you near your 40s, it is biologically more difficult to get pregnant as the number of eggs start decreasing in quantity and quality after mid 30s. To understand why pregnancies in late 30s are difficult, OnlyMyHealth interacted with Gynaecologists across India.
“As you age, so do your ovaries and the eggs inside them. The longer your eggs have been around, the more likely they are to produce a pregnancy with a chromosome problem that can lead to a condition like Down syndrome. This risk goes up significantly after 35,” said Dr Jhansi Lakshmi Peddi, Consultant gynaecologist, Sakra World Hospital, Bangalore.
Dr Anju Suryapani, Senior Consultant-Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Metro Hospitals & Heart Institute, Noida, said, “Pregnancy in late 30s may be challenging due to factors such as decreased fertility due to anti-mullerian hormone (AMH), high risk chromosomal abnormalities.”
“Increased likelihood of medical problems like hypertension, diabetes, overall quality of Egg declined with age, imparting fertility and increased risk of complication during pregnancy,” Dr Suryapani added.
According to Dr Peddi, pregnancy complications like misscarriage, birth defects, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and difficult labour can occur in late 30s.

Extra Care To Be Taken
Although, there are challenges and complications, women older than age 35 can have successful pregnancies and deliveries. Advances in medical care for both mother and baby can help prevent and treat many of the risks they face. Let’s understand from doctors on how extra care can be taken.
Keeping Blood Sugar Levels And Blood Pressure in Check
Doctors emphasised on keeping a check on blood pressure and glucose levels in the blood as imbalance of either of them can cause complications and might lead to gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.
Healthy Diet and Supplements
Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial during this delicate period. Dr Aditi Tandon, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Arva Health, Bangalore, suggested considering a prenatal vitamin. She said, “Protein supplementation in pregnancy is extremely important especially as our Indian diet is quite deficient in proteins. Pregnant women need 1.5 gm per kg per day. So if your weight was 60 kgs pre pregnancy, you need 90 gms of protein.”
