Pregnancy changes the body in several ways. Not only does it impact the reproductive, hormonal, and cardiovascular systems, but it also affects bone health and reduces bone density. While the effect may be temporary and can be managed with proper care and nutrition, it is crucial to maintain bone health before, during, and after pregnancy.

How Pregnancy Affects Bone Health?

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, a decrease in bone density is a normal part of pregnancy and lactation. This is because the developing foetus requires significant amounts of calcium for skeletal development, which is often met by mobilising calcium from the mother’s bones, explained Dr Tomar.

This is why there is increased demand for calcium and supplements during pregnancy, which also needs to be aided with dairy products and green leafy vegetables, he added.

For calcium absorption and healthy bones, one needs Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C, which one can also get from sunlight exposure and a good diet.

Pregnancy does increase the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life, especially if your bones do not get adequate calcium before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and during lactation, said Dr Tomar.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which your bones become weak and are likely to fracture. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Family and Reproductive Health found that osteoporosis is a major concern for postmenopausal women. Researchers believe pregnancy and breastfeeding could impact bone health due to increased calcium needs and lower oestrogen levels.

Tips To Maintain Bone Health For Expecting Mothers

Maintaining bone health during pregnancy necessitates a combination of strategies, including proper nutrient intake, particularly calcium, regular physical activity, and frequent prenatal counselling.

Nutrients needed during pregnancy are calcium, vitamin D3, iron, folic acid, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids. “All of these are needed from a healthy, balanced diet and supplements,” said Dr Tomar.

Exercise is important during pregnancy, but it should be done safely and under medical guidance. Staying physically active is beneficial, but it must be supported by a healthy diet and calcium supplements as prescribed by a gynaecologist, the doctor advised. However, if there’s a risk of miscarriage or premature delivery, complete bed rest is often recommended.
