Summer arrives with a change in season that affects our daily routine and activates the body to utilise its cleansing mechanisms more aggressively through sweating. It is one of the best methods the body uses to cleanse itself during this time of year. Sweating is frequently linked to the body’s cooling process, toxin removal, hormonal balance, and preservation of general health, including reproductive health.
We spoke to Dr Radhika Potluri, MBBS, MS – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Regional Medical Head and Fertility Specialist, Oasis Fertility, Visakhapatnam, who explained how sweating improves reproductive health.
Role of Skin In Detoxification
“The skin is the largest organ in the body and plays a significant role in detoxification. Sweating causes our bodies to release toxins like heavy metals, excess salts, and other waste products that can build up from a bad diet, stress and exposure to a toxic environment,” said Dr Potluri.
A 2012 study highlighted that sweating can expel heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic from the body, as these substances dissolve readily in water.
“If not expelled from the body, these toxins may disrupt the hormonal balance, essential for fertility. Summer is a great time to support reproductive health and reset internal systems as it allows the body to naturally detoxify through sweating,” added Dr Potluri.
Hormonal Balance and Female Fertility
“Maintaining and enhancing a woman’s fertility depends significantly on her hormonal balance. Overconsumption of toxins can upset the endocrine system, resulting in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), irregular menstrual cycles, or trouble ovulating,” added Dr Potluri.
Summer helps the body to detoxify naturally through sweating, thus reducing the load on major detox organs (liver and kidneys) and making them more efficient at controlling hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. This cleansing from the inside helps restore natural cycles and supports a healthier reproductive environment.

How Sweating Supports Male Fertility
In men, reproductive health relates directly to sperm motility, quality, and hormonal control. Heavy metals, including lead, cadmium and mercury are harmful to sperm production and testosterone. Sweating is one way through which the body gets rid of trace levels of these metals. By engaging in regular exercises, one can increase the detoxing effect and improve circulation, thus lowering stress and improving fertility levels.
Stress Relief and the Importance of Hydration
“Furthermore, sweating triggers the release of endorphins and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone that negatively impacts both male and female fertility. Hydration is essential in the detox process. When a person experiences increased sweating, it’s an indication that the body requires extra fluids to balance,” said Dr Potluri.
Drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, and electrolyte-rich fluids during summer helps flush out toxins more effectively, supports kidney function, and maintains reproductive tissues well-nourished and oxygenated.

A Season for Fertility-Friendly Lifestyle Habits
Additionally, summer encourages detox lifestyle habits, such as consuming low-calorie seasonal fruit and vegetables, staying outdoors more, and enjoying improved sleep. These activities allow for the most conducive conditions for fertility and overall reproductive health.
Bottomline
Dr Potluri concluded, “By taking advantage of the cleansing action of sweating and practising informed self-care in the summer months, individuals can enhance their reproductive well-being and overall dynamism. Summer is an effective season to aid the body’s natural cycles and fertility goals as it can provide sustained gain from incremental mindful changes to lifestyle.”
