VIDEO: Kitten stolen in Brampton could face health risks, pet store worker says

Pet rescuers are pleading for the safe return of a 10-week-old kitten named Oz who was stolen from a store in Brampton on July 9, 2025.

A tiny 10-week-old kitten stolen from a Brampton pet store last week hasn’t been vaccinated and could face health risks.

Described by staff as “a roll of toilet paper with legs,” the kitten named Oz was cat-napped from the Pet Valu on West Drive near Queen Street East on July 9.

Oz is part of an adoption program with All For Love Cat Rescue, where cats who need a new home can interact with potential pet parents.

Staff tell INsauga.com that a man was playing with the kitten and showed interest in an adoption on the night of the theft. He asked about fees and the adoption process, which staff said wasn’t unusual.

But when staff went to assist another customer, the man made off with OZ by either stuffing him in a draw-string bag or hiding him in the man’s clothes.

Pet Valu released images of the suspect last week, but a newly-released video of surveillance footage shows the man playing with Oz before picking up the kitten and walking away. Staff say the man also stole some products.

Oz hasn’t gone through all the medical checks needed before a cat is eligible for adoption, and staff say the thief “robbed” the kitten of needed vaccinations, vetting, and microchipping to assist if a pet is lost.

He also hasn’t been neutered, has no immune system, and staff told INsauga they’re concerned for Oz’s safety “if he’s been dumped.”

A kitten similar to Oz was turned-in to an animal shelter in Mississauga last week. And while staff were hopeful it was their stolen kitten, Pet Valu says Oz is still missing.

Peel Regional Police confirmed to INsauga.com that officers are investigating the theft.

The suspect was wearing a dark beanie around his head, a black shirt with white writing and baggy grey jogging pants at the time of the theft, rescuers say. He may have been riding a skateboard and had yellow cat-eye contacts in, staff say.

Pet Valu is urging the suspect to bring Oz back to the store “with no questions asked.”

Anyone with information about this incident can contact Peel Regional Police by calling 905-453-3311. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.

When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, never have to testify, and could receive a $2,000 reward.
